This will be Gary's second year as head coach of the Aztecs. Gary Bowers is a 1997 graduate of Esperanza High School where he played offensive line for the Aztecs and was an all Sunset League center in '96 along with being the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year. After high school he went on the play at Fullerton College where he was a two year starter. His sophomore year he was an All Mission Conference center and the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year. He received a scholarship to Tarleton State University in Texas where he helped turn the program around to win the school’s first ever Lone star Conference Championship and make its first trip to the national playoffs. After graduation he returned to California and began his coaching career at El Dorado High School from 2004-2008 where helped turn the program around winning four straight league titles and Back to Back C.I.F. Championships in '06 and '07 as the offensive line coach. From 2009-2011 he coached at Los Alamitos High School helping the team with the win the 2010 Sunset League championship. The 2012 season was spent at Fullerton College where he helped the Hornets win the Conference championship. His offensive line paved the way to an average of 173 yards rushing per game. Gary was a teacher at Los Alamitos High School for seven years and was also the head freshman wrestling coach for three seasons. He is married to Katie Bowers who is the head El Dorado Cheerleading coach.
This will be Jack's 12th season coaching with the Aztecs. He coaches the running backs and helps with the offensive spotting from the pressbox. Jack attended UCSB where he ran track. Jack also coaches track. He is the offensive coordinator for the JV team. He and his wife, Kathy live in Yorba Linda. They have two sons, Sean, 23, a captain on the 2008 football team, and Todd, 21 a captain on the 2009 team.
Tony was a linebbacker on the 1996 and 1997 Sunset League Champion teams. He also played baseball at Esperanza. He went on to play linebacker at Colorado State University. He works in Orange County in real estate. This will be his fifth year coaching the Aztecs linebackers, and he will supervise the Aztec's special teams this year. He and his wife, Marisa, live in Yorba Linda with their son, Anthony.
This will be Coach Sproal's second year with the Aztecs. He played on the 2006 CIF Championship team at El Dorado and was coached by Coach Bowers.
Tommy was an All League linebacker and running back on the 2001 and 2002 Aztec football teams. He also played at Santa Ana Junior College and at Humboldt State. He was also a shot putter and discus thrower on the track team and an outstanding weightlifter. He teaches science at Esperanza. This will be his seventh season coaching the Aztecs. He lives in Yorba Linda.
This will be Bill's 39th season at Esperanza coaching and teaching English. He was Def. Coordinator for 18 years for Gary Meek and Head Coach from 2003-2008 finishing with a 53 - 20 record, winning four straight Sunset League championships, and having the 2005 team advancing to the CIF Division 1 Finals for the first time in school history. At Gahr High School he was Athlete of the Year. At Idaho State where he played football, he was Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the school and for the Big Sky Conference. He coaches the weightmen in track and has coached a national champion, 2 state champions and 16 CIF champions. He and his wife, Debbie live in Yorba Linda. His family includes sons, Travis and Jake who were Aztec football players and are West point graduates, and daughter, Carolyn who teaches in the district.
JV DEF. COORDINATOR AND VIDEO
Mike was a starting Guard and Tackle on the 2008 Sunset League Champions, and he is in the Aztec weightlifting Hall of Fame. He graduated from Esperanza in 2009. He coached the frosh teams for 3 years. He assists Coach Pendleton in coaching the throws in track in the spring. This will be his third year coaching the varsity Aztecs. Mike also works with the video taping and scouting for the Aztecs. He has made many highlight videos for the athletic teams. Mike is working on his degree at Cal. State Fullerton. He will be the JV defensive coordinator.
This will be Vodak's fourth year working with the Kickers and his first year as Running Backs Coach. Vodak is a 1979 graduate of Sonora High School where he played Full Back/Kicker. Vodak also ran track and was All Valley Oak League Champion his Junior and Senior Years. Vodak attended Pacific Christian College after high school where he met his wife Jodie of 32 years. After College Vodak played Semi-Professional Football and signed professional contracts with a few NFL and USFL teams in the early 80's. Vodak is the owner of Fanatics Athletic Club in Yorba Linda for the past 20 years and has been involved with the Aztec Men's Soccer Program Since 2000. He has worked as an assistant Head Coach for both the Boys and Girls Soccer Program both of which won CIF Titles. He has also recently worked as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Aztec Men's Basketball Team. Vodak is the proud father of three incredible children who were all graduates of Esperanza High School. Cassandra (2000) is now a Santa Ana Police Officer. Conan (2005) is now the Head Men's Varsity Soccer Coach here at Esperanza and Kyle (2007) is a Personal Trainer and Conditioning Coach for Fanatics Athletic Club.
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR QUARTERBACKS
This will be Luis' second year working with the quarterbacks at Esperanza and first year as Offensive Coordinator. Luis was a quarterback at Valencia High School. He went on to play at Fullerton JC and Mars Hill University in North Carolina. He has coached at Fullerton JC. He also works as a medical technician.
Gary was the head football coach at Esperanza from 1986 until 2002 retiring with a record of 144 - 50 - 5. This will be his 30th year coaching with the Aztecs. His teams won two CIF Championships in 1990 and 1992 and six league championships. From 2003 until 2008 he was the Athletic Director. Gary played football and track at Santa Ana Valley High School. He played football at San Diego State for Don Coryell. He started coaching at Esperanza in 1976 and also coached track and baseball. His son, Jeoff, played and coached for the Aztecs. Gary and his wife, Sharon, live in Yorba Linda.
This will be Coach Killion's first year with the Aztecs. He played on the 2006 and 2007 CIF Championship teams at El Dorado and was coached by Coach Bowers. s.
